Developing Master Plan for Urban Regeneration of Mumbai, India 

1. Background

ㆍMumbai in India, the center of trade, economic, and financial activities in Southeast Asia, accounts for 40% of production in Maharashtra State.

ㆍRapid growth for the past 60 years in the city, though, caused various urban challenges due to poor physical and social infrastructure—Mumbai had high demand for industrial and urban infrastructure.  

2. Purpose

ㆍTo develop the east side of Mumbai for balanced development and raise competitiveness of Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) 

ㆍTo revitalize Mumbai through regeneration of the inner city 

ㆍTo improve the quality of living by providing quality housing and urban environment 

ㆍTo strengthen a collaborative business relationship between Korea and India 

3. Project Deion

The study contained the followings: 

ㆍa comprehensive review on Mumbai (from industry, economy and population to land use, public finance, and infrastructure) with researches on the challenges and development potential of the city

ㆍa review of related plans and cases 

ㆍselection of priority development areas

ㆍmaster plan development including strategies and tactics for the priority areas, spatial structure design, and sectoral, phased plans 

ㆍimplementation planning including reviews on feasibility and existing frameworks for improvement and financing plan.

4. Expected Impacts and Benefits

ㆍThe proposed master plan, redistributing urban benefits and population from Mumbai to MMR, will eventually improve industrial competitiveness of the city and help achieve the vision of Mumbai.  

ㆍKRIHS suggested differentiated development strategies from previous strategies by global corporations. 

ㆍThe development models proposed in this study could help developing countries tackle their challenges they are facing.
