1st GDPC policy seminar on how to revitalize Korea’s overseas urban development

The Global Development Partnership Center (GDPC) of Korea Research Institute for Human Settlements (KRIHS)  held the 1st GDPC policy seminar on how to revitalize Korea’s overseas urban development at the auditorium of KRIHS on April 19, 2016. This seminar was intended to explore the public and private sector’s roles to accelerate Korea’s overseas urban development and identify the current state of the country’s overseas urban development and further seek ways to invigorate the country’s overseas urban development. 
Myunggu Kang, professor of department of urban engineering at University of Seoul, delivered a presentation about the public and private sector’s roles to stimulate oversea’s urban development. He underscored that the public sector should support urban planning for developing countries while the private sector should enhance competitiveness in urban development. Also, Joongsuk Choi, general manager of Korea Research Center for Overseas Construction at International Contractors Association of Korea presented on the current state of Korea’s overseas urban development and how to invigorate the development. He stressed the significance of strengthening the public sector’s roles, expanding overseas presence in the software sector and building cooperation between the public and private sector regarding the localization of business models. 
With respect to the strategy for overseas expansion into smart city, Sanggun Lee, senior research fellow of KRIHS, suggested the  Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport as a control tower play a bigger role, stressing the need for smart city R&D projects.   

During discussions presided by Sungsoo Choi from KRIHS, Yul Kwon from Korea Institute for International Economic Policy, Yeonju Huh from the Global Urban Partnership Division of Seoul Metropolitan Government, Jangwhan Sung, senior research fellow at Land & Housing Institute, Gunwoo Lee, deputy general manager of Maeil Business Newspaper and Sangjoo Lee from Overseas Construction Policy Division of the  Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport intensively discussed the limitations and roles of the public and private sector regarding the expansion into overseas urban development. They pledged to beef up cooperation on overseas urban development based on Korea’s comparative edge in urban regeneration.
