The Global Development Partnership Center (GDPC) of the Korea Research Institute for Human Settlements (KRIHS) held a workshop on the metropolitan mass transportation policy with government officials and researchers from the department of urban planning and land use in Shanghai, the geographical research institute in Shanghai and the urban planning and design in Shanghai in the conference room on the fourth floor of the KRIHS building between 2: 30 PM and 5:00 PM on June 3, 2016.
The workshop comes after Dr. Huinam Chung and Dr. Wanggun Lee from the KRIHS gave a presentation in the international symposium on the Land Resource Utilization & Management held in Shanghai, China in November 2015.
Following an introduction to the KRIHS, Dr. Sanggun Lee at the National Infrastructure Research Division of the KRIHS led presentations and discussions about mass transportation system promotion in the metropolitan area. He delivered a lecture about the introduction and development of mass transportation system that came along with the expansion of the Seoul capital area and construction of new towns while comparing cases between the metropolitan area of Seoul and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Government officials from Shanghai asked a lot of questions especially about the BRT system in Seoul including the introduction and operation of the BRT system, profit-sharing and coordination with privately run bus operators, experiences about problem solving with relevant local bodies and expansion plans into neighboring cities. They learned Korea’s experience and know-how regarding the introduction of BRT that Shanghai is now considering. Following the workshop, the visitors from the Chinese city paid a visit to the Anyang Integrated Traffic Information Center and learned that the center’s functions have been gradually added in accordance with the local government’s finances.
